Post production consists of editing, mixing, delivery of stems, and in the case of a CD release, mastering.

Step 1:

File Preparation

Prepping files for transfer from one DAW to another is an important step. How files are exported will vary, so instructions will be provided. Under special circumstances it might make more sense to work in the native DAW of your project, but otherwise I will produce the best results using the tools I am most experienced with.

Step 2: The Edit

If you have multiple takes to work with, the best of each take can be selected to create one seamless performance. Editing can also fix undesirable inconsistencies in the timing of a performance.

Problems that can’t be fixed during production or editing can be addressed or mitigated using modern tools such as iZotope’s RX or Celemony’s Melodyne.

What is possible will depend on: the number of takes available, the degree of separation between instruments, and the nature of the problem.

Step 3: The Mix

Mixing can serve a number of purposes. The most straight forward type of mix is clean, presents the music and performance without distraction, or reinforces the aesthetic of the score; most projects fall into this category.

A mix can also serve as an extension of the sound design and production. In this way it can alter the emotional impact of the music, or communicate things that can only be said with production.

First individual tracks are routed into groups called stems. Delivering stems gives the re-recording mixer some control over the balance between instruments.

After this, the mix down process begins. Levels, eq, reverb, and other effects are applied to create the desired aesthetic. If your project will primarily be played back on phones and laptops special considerations can be made for low frequencies.

Finally, the stems for each cue will be prepared for delivery.

If your project will have an album release a mastering session will be required.
